Execution Set for Ohio Inmate in Gay Bar Killing

Friday Feb 15, 2013

The Ohio Supreme Court has set a 2015 execution date for a condemned inmate who killed a man in Cincinnati whom he met in a gay bar in 1985.

Robert Van Hook claimed temporary insanity, but never denied strangling and then stabbing David Self to death at his Cincinnati apartment.

The court on Friday set a March 12, 2015 date for Van Hook, whose death sentence was reinstated four years ago after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his claims of ineffective legal aid during his trial.

The court's announcement comes one day after the Ohio prisons department said it might seek legislation to help acquire new supplies of its capital punishment drug without which future executions might not be possible.

Ohio's current execution drug supply expires in September.

Gay bar killing? The story says strangled in apartment. Can’t believe crumminess of story.

The article says that they met in a bar. They went back to his apartment, probably to hookup, and that’s we’re he killed him. What’s not believable about that?

It is not where he met his victim that is interesting here - it is the capital punishment - when did two wrongs equal a right

I quite agree with the last comment. What Van Hook did was a horrible crime and he does deserve severe punishment. However, capital punishment is wrong and turns the state into a murderer. Ideally, the sentence will be commuted to life in prison with a mandatory requirement for hard labour.

Why should he get to live I bet the guy he killed would like to still be here and what about the guys family is no one thinking about them all I saw on here was how wrong it is for him. He took a life now he needs to give his life we need to have eye for an eye I bet people will think twice before they break the law and kill someone

Nobody knows what happened, the system failed VanHook as a child. He was abused sexually and mentally and back in the 80’s they didn’t look into those circumstances then. Yes murder is illegal, yes what VanHook did was wrong but he was already damaged someone should have helped him before this happened.
