NYC's Webster Hall Purchased for $35M, Future as Nightclub Unclear

Wednesday Apr 5, 2017

East Village nightclub Webster Hall, home to the popular gay circuit event Allegria has been purchased for a whopping $35 million.

According to the New York Post, the popular nightspot named "nightclub of the year" by Pollstar, has been sold by Lon Ballinger to Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment who operate Barclay's Center in Brooklyn and the new Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.

Although plans for property have not been made public, it appears that its days as a dance club are numbered. The new owners appear to show more of an interest in the property as a concert venue.

Jay Marciano of AEG, who partnered with Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment on the deal said in a statement that his organization had been looking for a venue in the 1,500-capacity range and realized "it would be cost prohibitive to try and build a venue like Webster Hall from scratch."

Webster Hall is one of New York City's most historically significant theater and event halls, having hosted social events of all types since the club's construction in 1886. According to Pollstar Magazine, as of August 1, 2016, Webster Hall is the number one Club Venue in New York by ticket sales, and number three in the world.
