Rainbow Fashion Week Returns to NYC
Rainbow Fashion Week (RFW) is returning to New York City - one of the four fashion capitals of the world - for the fourth consecutive year June 16-23, kicking off Manhattan's pre-Pride events with eight days of queer fashion shows and a loud message of social responsibility and U.N.I.T.Y.
This year Beckford is upping the volume on her endeavor to create a morally accountable fashion week by rallying fashionista enthusiasts, designers and industry reps around one central unifying theme: One Nation Under the Rainbow - an advocacy for 'fashionable' change!
Beckford intends to carry on her a global pledge to remain the world's cleanest runway, sourcing carbon neutral and renewable energy to resource its shows. She is also committed to continue to celebrate and embrace diversity. RFW celebrates designs and styles for all body types and genders during an eight-day eco-friendly queer extravaganza.
Rainbow Fashion Week became the world first Carbon Neutral Fashion Brand. But they didn't just stop there. RFW is also the worlds' first fashion brand to showcase two double mastectomy breast cancer survivors and a female to male (FTM) 11-year-old Trans-boy to hit the catwalk, who, by the way, graced the cover of National Geographic this year. The event is dispelling the myth of "appropriate body types."
Conceptualized in June 2013 by Jag E. Beckford and endorsed by Mayor Bill DeBlasio as "An Official New York City Pre- Pride Fashion Event," RFW not only brings fashion at its finest, but as well displays the skills of fashion industry insiders and experts as out and proud LGBT professionals.
LGBT fashionistas are slated to serve up a dazzling platter of colors, patterns, prints and styles throughout the one-week event, setting the tone to lead fashion - not follow it.
The event continues to showcase the hottest celebrity couturiers and emerging designers who will sashay their new wave of trendy designs and hip collections.
Some of this year's themed runways include Drag Stars, Urban Knight, Rainbow Tots & Pets, Hair du Soleil and Beckford's very own label, Haus of Jag & Co, among others.
Jag, a Harlem native, was inspired by her mother (who passed in 2009) to follow her passion for fashion. When she launched her clothing line JagandCo (a collection of designs for women who are more gender fluid or more male identified in their style), she retired from her 15-year career as an entertainment lawyer. RFW, sort of organically, grew out of Jag's experience developing her own label.
Jag's motive behind RFW was to create a fashion show that would not only show off designers' latest creations but also provide a platform for the community to become aware of the designers, the people behind the scenes and have a social justice mission.
Over the last three years, Rainbow Fashion Week has attracted over 25,000 queer and gay-friendly attendees and over five million impressions.
Because the goal of RFW is not only to support the business of queer style, but also to foster a social responsibility; each fashion installment becomes a platform for activism and the promotion of sustainability - providing awareness to causes and issues still facing the LGBTQ community.
