Better Watch Out

The sparse and unofficial "Christmas Slasher" gets a surprise addition to that holiday genre. I enjoyed "Better Watch Out" so much that I viewed it twice in one week, a compliment to the filmmakers who've made a very unique horror/thriller movie.

The problem I'm having with this glowing review of "Better Watch Out" is that there's a mind-blowing twist that comes at about the 30-minute or so mark, making an elaborate film synopsis nearly impossible. What I will do is highlight the many things that make Well Go USA's new Blu-ray such a joy to watch:

- The acting is above average in all respects, specifically from its three young, lead actors.
- The movie is both funny and scary, a combination that must occur for a horror film to succeed.
- "Better Watch Out's" killer blindsided this reviewer.
- Two of the three leading actors (Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould) are reunited from M. Night Shyamalan's "The Visit" movie from two years ago.
- It's a pleasure to see actress Virginia Madsen appear in a horror film again, even if it's only for two scenes.
- The comedy "Home Alone" get homaged in many ways, specifically in one horrific scene.

What I will say about the plot of "Better Watch Out" is that it pits babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) against home invasion terrorists. There are very subtle nuances along the way that gives me a gut feeling writer/director Chris Peckover has a great career ahead of him.

In the "Making of Better Watch Out" documentary on the Blu-ray, Peckover goes into great detail of how he helped re-write the screenplay and how much he enjoyed working with the young actors. All of the behind-the-scenes footage show the director with mostly a smile on his face. What surprised me most in this almost hour-long featurette is that all of the young actors are Australian.

The trailer for "Better Watch Out" can be viewed too but gets recommended for viewing after watching the film...it spoils the out-of-nowhere plot twist.
