Cast Grows for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach's 'Barbie'
There's fresh casting news about the latest Greta Gerwig/Noah Baumbach collab, a live-action outing for Barbie and Ken, including the signing of trans actress Hari Nef ("And Just Like That").
Nef, along with Issa Rae ("Insecure"), Ncuti Gatwa ("Sex Education"), and Simu Liu ("Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings"), will join Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who will play Barbie and Ken, respectively, according to Buzzfeed.
"Other cast mates include, but are not limited to: America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera, and Rhea Perlman," the site added.
Saoirse Ronan is reportedly also set to appear in the film. "Where Greta goes, Saorsie will soon follow," Buzzfeed joked, referencing the pair's collabs, including 2017's "Lady Bird" and 2019's "Little Women."
In other casting news, Dua Lipa is also set to appear in "Barbie," Buzzfeed said.
Buzzfeed cited Kyle Buchanan of the New York Times, whose tweet from Cannes prompted the site to report that "Greta is plotting her own Multiverse of Mattel-ness by casting several other A-listers to play alternative Barbies and Kens." Rea and Nef play "alternate" Barbies, Buchanan shared, and Liu and Gatwa play "alternate" Kens.
The film's story is under wraps, but what has been announced is that
Gerwig and Baumbach are co-writing "Barbie," and Gerwig is directing. The two also co-wrote 2012's "Frances Ha" and 2015's "Mistress America," both of which Baumbach directed and Gerwig starred in.
"Barbie" is set for release next year.
