The San Francisco Giants will be the first professional sports team to produce an "It Gets Better" video to raise awareness and tolerance for LGBT youth, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The newspaper notes that the "It Gets Better" movement has resulted in over 10,000 videos on YouTube. The goal is to address the problems of gay suicide and anti-gay bullying. Leading the way in the effort to get the Giants aboard was Sean Chapin, a lifelong fan of the team who began an online petition, which got more than 6,000 signatures.

"The San Francisco Giants are in an extraordinary position to lead the rest of the professional sporting world and possibly make the most important 'It Gets Better' video yet-not just as the recent world champion of Major League Baseball, but also as ambassadors of an iconic city, revered for celebrating diversity and differences with open arms," Chapin said in an online video pitch to the Giants.

Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter told the Chronicle that the content of the team's video has yet to be decided, and it isn't known if Giants players and coaches will participate.

Earlier this season, Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell was involved with a controversial exchange with fans at San Francisco's AT&T Park. In that exchange, McDowell allegedly used anti-gay slurs and offensive gestures. Major League Baseball suspended McDowell for two weeks, and he also issued an apology for his words and actions.
