Freddie Mercury’s “Mr Bad Guy” Celebrated With 40th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Freddie Mercury’s debut solo album, "Mr Bad Guy", originally released in April 1985, is returning to the spotlight with a lavish 40th anniversary reissue scheduled for December 5th, 2025. This special edition will be available in a 180-gram translucent green vinyl and as a picture disc LP, appealing to collectors and fans alike .
"Mr Bad Guy" marked a significant moment in Mercury’s career, representing his first full-length project apart from Queen, the band he helped propel to international superstardom. The album allowed Mercury to explore musical styles and personal themes that diverged from Queen’s signature stadium rock sound, instead embracing dance-pop influences inspired by the vibrant club scene of the early 1980s .
Mercury himself described the album as a creative outlet for ideas that he “really couldn’t do within Queen,” further stating, “I had a lot of ideas bursting to get out, and there were a lot of musical territories I wanted to explore” . The album was co-produced with Reinhold Mack at Munich’s Musicland Studio, a location familiar to Queen fans from previous recordings .
"Mr Bad Guy" includes 11 tracks penned by Mercury, with standout singles such as “I Was Born To Love You,” “Made In Heaven,” “Living On My Own,” and “Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow.” While the album reached Number 6 on the UK charts, its initial reception in the US was more muted, only later gaining recognition as Queen reworked some of its tracks for their 1995 album "Made in Heaven" .
The 40th anniversary edition features the acclaimed 2019 remaster by Queen’s longtime sound engineers, Justin Shirley-Smith and Joshua J. Macrae. Shirley-Smith explained, “We went back to the original multi-track tapes... The idea wasn’t to try to make it sound like they would make it now, it was to make it sound like it would have then if they’d had better technology and more time. And of course, it’s a massive honor to work on anything Freddie did, and we always treat it with the utmost respect” .
The new reissue is both a tribute to Mercury’s artistry and a celebration of his legacy as a pioneering queer icon. His visibility and unapologetic self-expression have made him an enduring figure within the LGBTQ+ community, inspiring generations to embrace their authentic selves. Mercury’s flamboyant stage persona and intimate songwriting offered representation and affirmation at a time when LGBTQ+ voices were often marginalized in mainstream media .
The anniversary reissue arrives amid renewed interest in Mercury’s life and work, particularly his influence on LGBTQ+ history. Mercury, who was openly bisexual, challenged stereotypes and broke boundaries throughout his career. His solo work, including "Mr Bad Guy, is frequently cited as a touchstone for queer visibility in music, blending personal reflection with dance-floor exuberance .
This release not only commemorates the album’s artistic achievements but also highlights Mercury’s role in shaping a more inclusive cultural landscape. As fans and historians revisit "Mr Bad Guy", the album’s enduring relevance is underscored by its celebration of individuality, creative freedom, and the importance of LGBTQ+ representation in the arts .
