Tony Nominations Announced; 'The Great Comet' Leads Pack with 12 Nods
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Nominations for the 2017 Tony Awards were announced Tuesday morning in New York by Tony winner Jane Krakowski and Tony nominee Chris Jackson. The nominations capped off an impressive theater season that saw 13 new musicals, 10 new plays, nine play revivals and five musical revivals.
Leading the pack for musicals with 12 nominations is the Tolstoy-inspired tuner "Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812." The most honored non-musical of the season was "A Doll's House, Part 2" which garnered eight nominations.
The stiffest competition this season is in the Best Actress in a musical category, which predictably has Broadway powerhouses Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole from "War Paint" going up against each other and Bette Midler, who has been breaking the box office at the Shubert Theater in the revival of "Hello Dolly."
The most notable snubs this season were: Alison Janney for her work in the revival of "Six Degrees of Separation", and the revival of "Sunset Boulevard." Musicals "A Bronx Tale", "Amelie", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Paramour" received no nods.
