Nick Offerman Strikes Back at Right-Wing Troll for Homophobic Meme Featuring his 'Parks and Recreation' Character
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Nick Offerman hates homophobia. Remember when he won an Independent Spirit Award for playing a queer man in a relationship with Murray Bartlett on "The Last of Us?" Some of his fans weren't too happy about him playing a queer character, which he addressed in his speech.
"Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent," Offerman said. "Stories with guts, that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, 'Why did you have to make it a gay story?' We say, 'Because you ask questions like that.' It's not a gay story. It's a love story, you asshole. So, more of that.'"
Offerman was equally protective of his "Parks and Recreations" character Ron Swanson, and he reacted strongly when he saw his character used in a homophobic video posted by right-wing troll Michael Flynn Jr., son of Donald Trump's former U.S. national security advisor Michael Flynn.
The Daily Beast reports that Flynn "posted a manipulated GIF on X of Offerman's 'Parks and Recreation' character, Ron Swanson, throwing a pride flag into a dumpster. In the original clip, Offerman's character is throwing away a computer."
Offerman responded to the meme on Monday, writing, "Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb fuck. #HappyPride."
Variety writes that Offerman was highlighting the "Parks and Recreation" series finale, "One Last Ride," where Ron serves as the best man to his hairdresser, Typhoon (Rodney To).
The actor is not one to let homophobic critics get away with slandering his projects.
